My bike is ready to go.
I’m ready to go.

And then, the Avenue of the Giants. I know I’m biased, but I can’t think of a better way to see this stand of redwoods than to bicycle through the forest. One of my fellow riders compares it to entering a cathedral:

We had lunch at the Women’s Grove, and I loved the inscriptions above the fireplaces:

I fought the urge to take the obligatory tree-hugger photo – the encounters some fellow riders were having with the poison oak at the foot of the trees was a motivating factor. I kept a respectful distance.

My legs may look like delicate little ferns, but they felt like the redwoods: tall, ancient, majestic.

After lunch, I rode for almost an hour alone, but not alone, my heart stirred to thoughts deeper than speech.

At 2:17, I rolled into the Signature Coffee Company in Redway, California. The fifty mile mark. My first fifty of fifty in fifty.
